Janesville/Madison--Carl James “Jim” Wenz passed away peacefully on Sunday May 26, 2019 in Evansville, WI. He was born in Troy, NY on December 10, 1922 to Carl Wenz and Susan Baer. He graduated from Baraboo High School in 1942. Jim served in the U.S. Army briefly after WWII. Following his parent’s example, Jim tried his best to live a chemical free lifestyle to live a full and long life.
Jim held many jobs, the longest one was a lab tech/inventory specialist with the UW Madison Chemical Engineering Department where he retired.
In his later years Jim enjoyed surfing the web, gleaming out hidden gems of knowledge that he sent out to his email list. He also shared much Biblical wisdom from his studies.
Jim married Dona (Fish) Swanson and they had 5 children: Rocky James, Gaya Mae Ellingson, Aquila Rebecca Wagner, Samuel Immanuel and Naomi Ruth Cook. Jim served as midwife for his first 3 children when they lived in Sumpter, WI. Later they moved to Madison, then Oregon, WI. Jim and Dona moved to Baraboo buying a motel there.
Jim moved back to Madison after his divorce where he met and married his second wife Jane (Sanford) Carrier in 1981. Jane and Jim served as missionaries to Guatemala for 7 years after Jim’s retirement. They returned to Madison and enjoyed being grandparents.
In 2009, after Jane’s death, Jim bought a small house in Janesville where he gardened and created a natural habitat for butterflies and bees. He followed the naturalist lifestyle learned from his mother and grandmother who taught him about plants and the ecosystem. He lived there until his last few months at Kelly House.
Jim is survived by his brother Dan Wenz, his first wife Dona Swanson, children: Rocky Wenz, Aquila Wagner, Samuel (Denise) Wenz, Naomi (Terry) Cook. Step- children: Elizabeth Jackson, David Carrier, Ben (Elena) Carrier. Grandchildren: Daniel, Isaac, Ben, Gunner, Graham, Gage, Gavin, Madison. Step grandchildren: Tyson (Jessica), Adriel, Alexandra and Gabby. Great grand children: Destany, Terrin and Laelle.
Jim is preceded in death by brother Richard “Dick” Wenz, second wife Jane, daughter Gaya (Roger) Ellingson and great grandson Kovi Kyrie Jackson.
Many thanks to the staff at Kelly House and the visiting Agrace Hospice Care staff and their compassionate care of Jim. Thank you to the congregation of City of Hope church for their fellowship with Jim.
A visitation and memorial service will be held at City of Hope Church, 1214 Joliet St, Janesville, WI on Thursday June 13, 2019 at 1pm.
Services are entrusted to Compassion Cremation-Madison.
